If a Fountain of Youth exists… I believe it’s Yoga. I have been a student of yoga for decades and have always loved it. But it wasn’t until I tried Iyengar Yoga that it became my addiction. Though regular practice, I have regenerated my body in ways unimaginable by any other form of exercise… and at age 50, I definitely have my wear and tear issues. The Iyengar system focuses on alignment, timing and sequencing. Correct alignment requires focus and attention by the student. Through a regular yoga practice vitality, balance and coordination are enhanced.
I have heard many state “I can’t do yoga, I am just not that flexible.” Well, that is all the more reason to practice yoga. In addition, yoga is not only about flexibility, it is also about building strength, improving the function of body systems and internal organs. For me, I tend to be hyper-flexible. I naturally have too much range of motion, which causes a tendency to hyper-extend. I use yoga to build strength to support my frame.
Typically, the exercise most of us do just reinforces misalignment. I know, been there, done that. Most of us do not know how to use our bodies properly, no one ever taught us. We stretch our more flexible areas and enlist our already better-developed muscles for strength. This just exacerbates existing problems and conditions. With the aid of teachers trained in anatomy, physiology and therapeutics, we can safely and effectively strengthen our weaker areas, stretch our stiff areas, and realign our bodies. Learning to use our bodies properly will enhance our performance in all other physical activities.
Iyengar teachers go through rigorous training programs and mandatory continuing education. In Iyengar Yoga – everyday, household items are used, such as blankets, straps and blocks. Chairs and walls are also used as props in innovative ways. There are many therapeutic applications to Iyengar Yoga that can bring relief from back pain, scoliosis, headaches, stress, inflammation, chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ, knee issues and multiple sclerosis.
