Is your blow dryer a blow torch?

If you start noticing the ends of your hair being burned suddenly, take a good look at your Hair dryer. Is it spewing fire balls or getting red hot close behind the front grill? Often we are negligent about cleaning the intake air vents on our hair dryers. (Yes, I have too) The intake air vent brings in air to cool the motor. When the vents are blocked with lint, the dryer can get torch hot. If you are lucky, you hair dryer will automatically shut off when the motor gets too hot, but not always. Remove the lint screen from the dryer and rinse under water to clean, dry before replacing. The lint screen on a typical consumer hair dryer generally does not do a good job of catching all the lint that the dryer pulls in (that’s because they are built by accountants :) To clean the lint that plugs the non-removable screen, use an old toothbrush. Hair that is bleached, lightened, or the finer front hairline is more prone to burning. Do not concentrate the dryer in one particular area to too long, it’s not the 70’s or 80’s.

Sometimes it is time to get a new dryer. An ionic blow dryer is the way to go in the 21st century. An ionic blow dryer emits millions of negative charged particles that bond to your hair. Negative Ions break down moisture molecules with very little heat and
dry your hair quickly. In addition, negative ions reduce both frizz and heat damage while leaving your hair fuller, shinier and healthier. Look for a ceramic hair dryer, preferably tourmaline.

For really thick or curly hair that takes longer to dry, I would suggest investing in a professional hair dryer. Higher priced dryers have ionic generators and will out put more negative ions. You will also have a more durable tool. Fine hair can benefit from a higher quality ionic hair dryer too, and will treat it gently, as well as create less static. The rest of us can use a moderately priced dryer with a ceramic or tourmaline core, these generate less negative ions, but are less of an investment. I have been styling hair since the late 1970s. Blow drying was a novelty, and barely accepted as a grooming aid for men. But with time and evolution, men using a blow dryer became as common as using a comb or brush. Currently, the flat iron is the “new blow dryer” for men’s hair styling issues.

Why shouldn’t a guy use a flat iron for a more groomed look? Providing the hair is long enough (about two inches or more). But even shorter hair has the option of using a mini flat iron. It’s a quick and easy way to eliminate annoying waves and curls, as well as control some front cowlicks. And when using the proper tool, it’s fast too.

Since the explosion of the flat iron on the hair scene, countless women have proclaimed “the flat iron has changed my life.” And there are guys that love the flat iron too, but they’re embarrassed to admit it. This stigma will not exist for long, and as with the blow dryer, a time will come when the flat iron can be a regular part of grooming for men too.

For guys ahead of the curve, the one-inch wide Sedu is a really great flat iron that heats in 30 seconds and straightens hair effortlessly. It is small and light with a comfortable grip. For hair shorter that two inches, Sedu Revolution Shortie Mini Styler is a pocket-sized, dual-voltage tourmaline ionic styler with all the luxury and amenities of a full-sized iron. Ideal for short hair, touch-up and travel! Includes FREE heat-proof travel pouch and mitt.
