Resourcefulness is my Greatest Commodity

One of the greatest compliments that I have ever received was from a dear and extremely street-wise friend. Francine stated “if I were stranded anywhere I would want to be with you because you are so resourceful.” Wow, ok. I know I am resourceful, but did not realize that it was so strongly apparent to others.

In the current state of this economic paradigm shift, resourcefulness is certainly a commodity. Though I am far from the level of security that I would like to have, I am doing better than surviving in these worst of times. I use my resourceful skills fervently and make sure to help others any way I can. What developed this strength? How do I package it, brand it and expand upon it?

I have been described as an entrepreneur. First, let’s understand the force and the mindset that drives an entrepreneur. I have always worked for myself, even when acting as an independent contractor under someone else’s umbrella. As a hairstylist, my job encompasses so much more than most can imagine. I am responsible for building and maintaining client relationships. As an entrepreneur, these are some of the things I have learned:

Staying at the forefront of trends is seeing change and reacting to it, and we’re not just talking fashion. The internet is an essential tool to stay at the forefront of change. Growth and change should not be feared. Never get stuck in your thinking, always maintain an innovative perspective. An Entrepreneur rides the wave of change by developing new ideas that benefit our culture, and learn how to better work in it.

Ask yourself – what is important? And in what priority? As a pragmatist, I am interested in practical consequences and real outcomes. Entrepreneurs instinctively think for themselves, instinctively network, and instinctively keep several balls in the air at once. (This is where ADD can work for you)

I cannot help being shocked and disgusted at hearing so many people trash our capitalistic system. While less than perfect, the alternative is far worse. We must maintain the spirit of Capitalism and not shoot ourselves in the foot just because things have become harder. That would be throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Don’t forget about your image! Our image is broadcasted to the public via the web these days, presenting your best physical appearance is very important.

Be a rabid networker! Create business and personal relationships with as many people as possible. Pay it forward, and genuinely find love and satisfaction in helping others. It will pay exponential dividends back to you.

Do you need a polished appearance? A website? Photographs for your business? A Video or Power Point presentation to market your services? A marketing plan to utilize your ad dollars with a Google ad words campaign? A business coach? A product patented and developed?

If you have a business but don’t have a website – that is like having a business but not carrying a business card. If you are seeking some type of employment, you need to have an excellent resume posted online.

The Internet is the greatest cost-effective marketing resource. But remember, once you adapt yourself to change – you can’t stay there, change is in perpetual motion.

Here is a book that I consider to be “Mindset 101”.

Who Moved My Cheese? An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life. Published in 1998, this is a motivational book by Spencer Johnson. It is a parable, a business fable about changing one’s work and life, and typical reactions to change.
